Okay, so oddly enough my last post is sort of blurring into this one. Bear in mind with my wonky hours I may not get days or times correct in this storyline.
On Saturday, my grandmother called me and asked me to pick her up some broth and bring it over to her place. It seems she’d had the flu since Monday (the 16th). She’d actually been barely eating since Monday and we were into Saturday already. She really didn’t look good when I saw her, and I mentioned that she should probably go see the doctor, so we agreed, she’d call first thing Monday morning (the 23rd). I got off work on Monday morning and at about 8am called her to see how she was doing. Not so well she said, and said that she’d call the doc and schedule an appt. I went to sleep for about 3 1/2 hours. I called her back, when I got up, to see if she’d made the appointment. She hadn’t but had decided she should probably go to the hospital. I rushed right over there to take her. So I got there, called her doc, he agreed hospital was best. So I scooped her up and took her to emergency. We got there at about 2pm and she was in one of the emergency rooms by 3pm. They hooked her up to fluids, as the determination was that she was dehydrated. In addition to that issue another problem had to be addressed. The night before, while getting out of bed, she was so weak she couldn’t help but fall. She fell and conked her head on the marble nightstand, as well as bruising her shoulder and back going down. What a mess. Luckily, she hadn’t been taking her cumadin like she should have, or she would have been in worse shape. She’s now being hydrated and is resting comfortably overnight.
My parents weren’t in town. I was available (as usual … remember guys? … I’m the ROCK, until I’m not!) So I took care of her until their flight landed today. They headed out to the hospital from the airport and relieved me, allowing me to go home for a good hour long nap. (Thank heavens for small favors) I felt bad about this though, because they’d been travelling all day long and I knew they were tired too. But, not one to look a gift horse and whatnot I took them up on it, I was exhausted!
Long story short … the ROCK came through, I didn’t panic, I didn’t flutter, I didn’t have a breakdown, I didn’t cry, I soothed my gramma when SHE cried. I didn’t go crazy-eyed at anyone. I’m even still feeling perfectly lucid! (although that may just be the sleep deprivation)
I’d like to know why it is I just seem to scare all the boys away. Perhaps I’m TOO independent? I certainly can’t be too bloody NEEDY!!! BAH and GRRR!
Maybe I should look into one of those dating sights. I believe Charmaine at Middle Aged Dating had encouraged us to write up our own profile at one time. I’ll give that a shot now. Here goes:

1/2 recipe pie dough (see Pâte Brisée recipe)
2 tablespoons olive oil
2 medium shallots, thinly sliced
10 ounces asparagus spears, cut on the diagonal into 1-inch long pieces
1/2 pound ham, cut into 1/4-inch cubes
Freshly ground pepper
1/2 cup milk
1/2 cup heavy cream
3 large eggs
6 ounces Gruyère cheese, grated (1 1/2 cups)
1 On a lightly floured surface, roll out dough into a 12-inch circle. Fit into a 10-by-1 1/2-inch round tart pan (with or without a removable bottom), pressing dough into corners. Transfer to freezer to chill for 30 minutes.
2 Preheat oven to 350°. Line pastry with parchment paper, wax paper, or aluminum foil, pressing into the corners and edges. Fill at least two-thirds with baking weights – dried beans, rice, or aluminum pie weights. Bake first for 15 minutes, remove from oven and let cool a few minutes. Carefully remove parchment paper and weights. Poke the bottom of the pie pan with the tongs of a fork and return to oven and bake an additional 10 minutes or until lightly golden. (Fork holes are for any air to escape.) Transfer to a wire rack to cool while making filling.
3 Heat oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium high heat. Add shallots, and cook, stirring, until translucent but not brown, about 1 minute. Add asparagus. Cook, stirring frequently, until asparagus are just cooked (al dente), slightly browned, firm, not mushy, 8 to 10 minutes.
4 Increase oven temperature to 375°F. Place tart pan on a baking sheet to catch any run-off there might be (especially if you are using a pan with a removable bottom.) Sprinkle half the cheese evenly over the bottom of the crust. Spread asparagus and ham over the cheese and then top with remaining cheese. In a medium bowl, whisk together milk, cream, and eggs. Season with fresh ground pepper. Pour over cheese. Transfer to oven, and bake until just set in the center, 30 to 35 minutes. Cool on a wire rack for about 10 minutes before slicing.
